“tangi” by hone tawhare
In the poem “tangi” by Hone Tawhare the main idea is grief.some of the techniques used in the poem is the use of negatives and the contrast of the two funerals.
The important ideas in the poem are grief and the author uses negatives to show this. This is shown through the words “nor” could I find the author is writing about how he is grieving in a negative way in the start of the poem.
The author uses contrasting between two funerals to show the main idea of grief. The author writes about his mood at the European funeral, which is defined as a European funeral by the very European conations and violets. He writes about his mood at the European funeral as being disconnected and lost because he is not with his own culture. This is shown with the quote “on the boarded path” this shows he feels that there is a very dark line between the two funerals he also writes that he is out of place at the European funeral. However when he goes to the Maori funeral his mood changes because he feels connected and in his place he feels calmer and more at home. This is shown with the quote “calm vigil of hands” The negitives had been replaced by more positive feeling with the quotes "heard" and "saw". This shows that he fells more calm at the Maori funeral rather than at the European funeral because he is out of place at the European funeral. These quotes helped me understand the main idea by writing that he feels more at peace and the style of writing feels more calm and less out of place
In conclusion the author is trying to describe his feelings at both funerals and he is trying to describe the different tones at the different funerals this is a good way of telling the authors purpose of showing his feelings at both funerals.
