In the film slum dog millionaire an important conflict in the film was the conflict between the game show host (Prem) and Jamal. In this essay I will be describing about the conflict between Jamal and Prem I will also be talking about the visual and verbal techniques in the film and how these techniques were used to contrast the tension between the two.
An important conflict in the film Slum dog millionaire directed by Danny Boyle is the conflict between Jamal the Prem. This conflict goes on throughout the film and is evident that there is a conflict between from the very start. For example when Prem and Jamal first meet each other and the introductions are made Prem makes fun of Jamal calling him names like a ‘chi wallah’ and a ‘Phone basher’. This makes him seems arrogant, rude and he also feels that Jamal is inferior to him. This conflict develops throughout the film. As Jamal progresses on through the show, Prem gets more and more anxious and this is evident when Prem try to make him purposely get a question wrong to make him loose the game. This is happening because Prem feels this way because he dose not want Jamal to be more popular than him and he feels that if Jamal wins then he will be more popular than he is.
The techniques used in this film helped to contrast the tension between them. For example the camera shots used at the start was a crane shot. This technique was used to give an impression that the stage was an area because it looked like they were facing off. This helped create tension between the two. Another technique used to contrast the tension between them was the mid shot also at the start of the film. This was used to show an impression of a face of between the two because it looked they were in a stare down with each other The audio techniques used to contrast the tension between them were used in the film.
Some of the techniques in the film include dialogue. Dialogue was used in the film to contrast the tension between them. An example of this was at the start of the film Prem demonstrates his arrogance by making fun of Jamal by calling him names such as a ‘chi wallah’ and a ‘phone basher’ and humiliating him in front of the audience. This shows that there is tension between them because Prem thinks that he is above Jamal because he is only a Slum dog. Jamal’s acting style also contrast this because through out the film Jamal acts laid back and speak in a casual manner. The dialogue that he uses feels very casual because he sicks to one sentence at a time. For example even in the most pressured moments he still sticks to one-liners and keeps his dialogue to a minimum.
In conclusion the verbal and visual techniques helped me to understand the conflict between Jamal and prem. The audio and visual techniques used by the director also helped me to understand the tension between Jamal and Prem.
